An all-round media player for different kinds of audio and video files.

Pros: Elecard MPEG Player is a media player which is primarily designed to play video files. It plays MPEG1, MPEG2, AVC/H.264 (with plug-in), MPEG4. It supports divX, 3GP, VOBs, DVB, and SVCD video formats. It plays AAC, MP2, and MP3 audio. A wonderful feature is its ability to play HD and HDDVD. It allows video frame capturing and output in BMP, JPEG and GIF formats. Other than all other standard video player features it has a number of advanced features: De-interlacing filters and de-interlacing field interpolation; quarter resolution playback for previewing (along with fast forwarding mode); raw data trimming; audio stream output statistics, and detailed stream information from video sequence and system headers; and seek forward and seek backward with adjustable time units (1, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 seconds). It has a decent interface that provides most of the common functions on the main player control.

Cons: A limitation of most media players tends to be the inability to play certain files (especially video files) because the required codec is not supported (downloading the codec doesn’t appear to be an easy task). And that is the limitation of the Elecard Player. As such there are better, and more importantly free players available, so it seems a little bit of a waste to pay for limited functionality. Some of the more advanced features (such as de-interlacing) are not readily controllable through the interface. It definitely falls short in terms of playing music files, and should be considered only as a video player. It does not seem to have a rich set of keyboard shortcuts.

Overall: 4 stars. It’s a pretty good media player and has a decent interface. However, it is primarily a video player, lacking all the bells and whistles now expected of music players. It is unable to play certain video files because of missing codecs.
